Rosacea is a common but a chronic skin condition characterized by redness and sometimes pimples. It also causes skin sensitivity, blood vessel abnormalities, flaky skin, papules and pustules and thickening of the skin. These conditions usually appear in a butterfly shaped pattern covering cheeks, nose and chin.
It begins with redness on the central face across the cheeks, nose, or forehead and is accompanied by a ruddy complexion and sensitivity to skincare and make-up products. This redness varies in the early adult years and appears to clear up for certain periods, but as the time progresses, the redness and sensitivity usually becomes permanent.
According to a general notion Rosacea is a blood-vessel disorder. The treatments for the problem focuses on reducing inflammation, regulating blood vessel function and reducing exacerbating factors (many patients have Rosacea that is ‘triggered’ by certain environmental factors such as heat, alcohol or certain foods).
Treatment for Rosacea may involve
- Oral and topical antibiotics
- Topical Vitamin A (retinaldehyde)
- Beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid)
- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
- Light based therapies to reduce redness and correct vascular abnormalities.
- Using a solvent based cleanser for cleansing can reduce irritation.
- Topical zinc oxide is also helpful for Rosacea patients as an effective sunscreen, and for its anti-inflammatory properties.
